Grant Secured under Primary Measure:  Support for Rural Tourism

The Land Trust took ownership of Pleasley Pit in 2008 and works closely with three volunteer groups – the Pleasley Pit Trust, Friends of Pleasley Pit, and Pleasley Pit Nature Study Group – to care for the site and preserve the important mining heritage on the site. The site was awarded the prestigious Heritage Angel award in 2011 for its contribution to the preservation of the country’s industrial heritage.

The charity has secured grant funding to support a project to create a new visitor centre and café providing a wide range of facilities which will increase visitor numbers to the area.

The new visitor centre includes a new kitchen and food preparation area, indoor and outdoor seating, storage, flexible education/events/classroom spaces, exhibition and display of artefacts, and office space for volunteers and employees.  The project has increased the capability to provide extra facilities and services and will create two full time equivalent (FTE) jobs.
