The history and heritage of Clay Cross is the inspiration behind an innovative multi-media trail which uses the latest mobile phone technology to bring the town’s story to life – the first of its kind in the UK.

Stories told by local residents and photos from years gone by are sent directly to people’s smartphones as they reach points of interest on the 2.5 mile trail around the town, thanks to Bluetooth and GPS technology.

Meanwhile, barcodes have been placed on buildings around Clay Cross which, when scanned with a smartphone, provide nuggets of information about the area’s past.

The application - which is available for iPhone, Blackberry, Android and Symbian devices – is free to download from www.audiotrails.co.uk/claycross

The project is designed to boost local tourism,  and uses the latest technology to capture the history of Clay Cross – currently at the centre of a multi-million pound regeneration scheme.

The trail takes around two to three hours to complete, and takes walkers on a thirteen point tour around the town.
